Opportunities in a Low Interest Rate Environment
The August 7520 rate is lower than it has been in 18 months. When interest rates are at historic lows (see the September Legislative Update), optimal use can be made of wealth transfer tools such as grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs) and charitable lead annuity trusts (CLATs), as well as financing tools such as private annuities, installment sales and self-cancelling installment notes. For any individuals who made Roth conversions in 2009 (prior to the elimination of the $100,000 adjusted gross income limit), it should be noted that the deadline for recharacterization is coming up next month on October 15. If the Roth IRA has not performed well, it may be helpful to recharacterize the 2009 conversion and then reconvert at a later time.
