Clients Continue to Give Up a Lot of Return Waiting for Rates to Go Up--Idea from Genworth and Barron's Mention

Clients are giving up a lot of money waiting for rates to go up.  History tells us that rates go up gradually; they most likely won't double in 12 months. Now’s the time to take advantage of higher yielding products that offer liquidity, like MYGA, SPDA, and Return of Premium. The client's money is put to work now, and there's a hedge built-in if rates do move up quickly. Compared to the highest yielding money market account, a client is currently giving up more than $2,000 per year per $100,000 by not taking advantage of a 3% fixed annuity: this is commonly referred to as the "cost of waiting." How many times do you hear “we’re waiting for rates for rise” when you speak with producers or clients? We’ve heard it all year. Where are rates now

1 yr CD ( Bankrate.com national avg.)   5 yr CD      10 yr Treasury   Money Market

01/03/11          ~66bps                                          ~1.85%          3.36%                ~1.2%
06/17/11            44bps                                            1.68%          2.94%                  87bps

How long do you wait for rates to go back up?  Here’s the last time rates were above:

4%: October 2008

5%: July 2007

6%: July 2000

7%: April 1995

8%: July 1991

9%: April 1989

So if your clients have been waiting for a modest rise in rates to 5%, then they’ve been sitting on the sidelines for almost 4 years (with many probably earning less than 2%). You can see the trend as rates go higher. When discussing annuities with your clients, please keep in mind that in the WSJ Barron’s report of the “25 Smart Annuity Choices”, the Secure Living Rate Saver was ranked in the top five of 5 year fixed annuities and our SPIA was ranked in the top five among SPIA products.
