Wednesday, June 15 at Noon ET: Playing with Fire — Trusts and Annuities: Key Considerations for Trust Ownership of Annuities
The benefits and guarantees featured in annuity riders over the last 10–15 years make them more attractive to trustees. Annuities and trusts are complex instruments. If handled carefully, combining the two can provide clients with a powerful tool. If not, the combination could be a disaster! During this session, Gary Underwood, JD, CLU, ChFC and Bruce Tannahill, JD, CPA/PFS, CLU, ChFC, AEP will discuss the primary tax issues under the section 72 rules on non-natural persons, taxable distributions, distributions upon death, and penalty taxes. In addition, a brief review of the taxation rules for trusts will be presented. Click here for more information.

Let's Get To Work, Get Money Off of the Sidelines Using an Illustration From Genworth
As of June 3rd, the one year national average for CDs is 45bps and the five year national average is 1.69% APY(Bankrate.com). These numbers are lower than they were at the beginning of the year and yet clients still have billions of dollars sitting on the sidelines waiting for rates to rise. Here are the CD values over five years (before taxes):
1 Year 5 Year
$100,451 $101,704
$100,904 $103,438
$101,359 $105,201
$101,816 $106,994
$102,275 $108,817
When your producers are delivering new life and LTCI policies to their clients, have them ask their clients one simple question: “Do you have any CD(s) maturing or any assets sitting on the sidelines while you wait for rates to rise?” If your producers ask every time they deliver a policy, it could lead to more annuity business. Tell your producers to bring an illustration with them as a comparison. First, look at the surrender values on Liberty, Smart Rate and Independence over the same guarantee period, especially after 3 or 4 years. Then, move over to the guaranteed column. A picture is a powerful tool to show clients that even at perceived low rates, their money is growing substantially. With our comprehensive line of SPDA, there is sure to be a great fit for most clients. Below are links to 3 sample illustrations, the current rates (effective 05/18/11) and our product overview. Ten year treasuries are at their lowest point so far this year, so we may be in for another rate correction soon.
